The Type 21, an early production model of the “Zero-type Carrier-based Fighter,” performed remarkably well during the early stages of the war. It also fought valiantly in “Operation I,” an air campaign conducted in the Solomon and New Guinea theaters. This operation took place from April 7 to 15, 1943, with aircraft from the aircraft carriers Zuikaku, H?y?, and Hiy?, as well as base air units, launching joint sorties. Since Mitsubishi had ceased production of the Model 21 in June 1942, it is believed that most of the Model 21 Zero fighters deployed in this operation were manufactured by Nakajima. Nakajima Aircraft began mass production of the Zero fighter in November 1941. A characteristic of the Nakajima-built models is that their spinners were more pointed compared to those made by Mitsubishi; furthermore, due to their production timing, they were not equipped with the protruding mass balance on the ailerons. Furthermore, while the airframe paint scheme was initially the same as that of the Mitsubishi models, starting around the summer of 1942, Nakajima-built aircraft began to feature a white border around the Rising Sun emblem on the fuselage. This kit reproduces these manufacturer-specific differences, with the canopy frame and transparent sections molded as separate parts, and the rear fuselage section formed as a single piece using a slide mold. The markings allow for the reproduction of aircraft carried by the aircraft carriers Hiyo and Hiyo, as well as the light gray-white 202nd Air Group aircraft. Series Name 1/48 Scale Japanese Army and Navy Aircraft
