After completion, the 61st Destroyer Squadron was formed with four ships, Akizuki, Suzutsuki, Hatsuzuki, and Wakatsuki. Suzutsuki's first mission was to transport property for an air base on March 22, 1943. On May 22, upon returning to the mainland with the completion of this mission, she returned to Yokosuka escorting the battleship Musashi. Thereafter, she was engaged in fleet escort and transport operations. In 1944, she was severely damaged twice by lightning strikes from U.S. submarines, which severed her bow, but each time she recovered and returned to the front, demonstrating the strength of her military fortunes. On April 6, 1945, Suzutsuki participated in Operation Ten-ichi, a suicide attack on the Yamato, and together with Fuyutsuki, defended the battleship Yamato. The USS Suzutsuki was under heavy fire from American planes while conducting anti-aircraft fire for the defense of the Yamato. In this attack, the bridge was completely damaged, and the engine and front hull were cut off, rendering her inoperable. After the battle, it was thought that Suzutsuki had been sunk, but she managed to return to Sasebo by aft proceed, and was hastily accommodated in the dock. However, she managed to return to Sasebo by aft proceed, and was quickly accommodated in the dock. When she was repaired at the Sasebo Arsenal, the bridge was changed to a simple rectangular structure, and she was converted into an air defense battery without power. During an air raid on Sasebo after this air defense turret modification, she shot down one P51 Mustang fighter that had attacked the city. The Ryougetsu was to face the end of the war with her air defense battery in place, but after the war the structures above the hull were removed and she and her sister ship Fuyutsuki were used as a breakwater at Wakamatsu Harbor in Fukuoka Prefecture. *The image shown is a prototype. *Series No. will continue after renewal.
