Soryu" was completed at the end of 1937, and "Hiryu" was completed at Yokosuka Naval Arsenal on July 5, 1939, after further improvements to "Soryu". Based on the operational experience of the previously completed Soryu and Kaga, the bridge of Hiryu was placed in the center of the hull so as not to interfere with the launching aircraft, but since the bridge on the starboard side was above the chimney, it was placed on the port side. Although this arrangement was favorable in terms of weight distribution, it was found that the airflow from the bridge had a negative impact on landing craft. The only aircraft carriers built after this were built with the bridge on the starboard side, and only Hiryu and Akagi were built with the bridge on the port side, giving the ship a unique appearance. However, the "Hiryu" became an extremely successful and influential aircraft carrier, with a speed of over 34 knots, improved hull strength, increased defenses, and 57 aircraft on board. Hiryu's war record began with the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor on December 8, 1941, followed by the invasion of Wake Island, the mopping up of Java and New Guinea, and the Indian Ocean campaign, where the bombers aboard her had an astonishing hit rate and sank the British aircraft carrier "Hermies" and the heavy cruiser "Conwal". In the Indian Ocean campaign, the ship's bombers achieved an astonishing hit rate, sinking the British aircraft carrier "Hermies" and the heavy cruiser "Conwall. At the end of May 1942, Hiryu left Japan to participate in the fateful Battle of Midway. Early in the morning of June 5, 1942, Captain Tomonaga of the Hiryu judged that the first attack was insufficient and requested a land attack, leading to a hectic situation in which the air units that were in ship attack gear waiting on the mother ship were switched to land attack gear. In addition, a reconnaissance plane reported the discovery of an enemy task force, and the air force again changed its equipment to ship attack equipment. The Hiryu was the only one unscathed, so it launched an attack on the U.S. aircraft carriers and disabled the U.S. carrier USS Yorktown. However, the remaining two carriers were hit by a bombing run from the attack force, and four bombs and two close-range bombs hit the carrier, which caught fire and rendered it unseaworthy. After it was determined that rescue was hopeless, the destroyers Arashi and Nomu carried out a lightning attack, and the ship was thought to have sunk, but a plane aboard the Hosho found it drifting, and it was hurriedly sent to rescue it, but by the time it arrived in the area, there was no one to be found. *The image shown is a prototype. *The series No. will continue after renewal.
