This was because the U.S. was planning to acquire interests on the Chinese mainland, while Japan's policy of expanding its interests on the mainland, having gained a firm foothold on the continent through the Sino-Japanese and Russo-Japanese wars, was not something that both countries wanted to pursue. Both countries were striving to increase their naval power, and Japan was to implement the plan for the 88th Fleet, centering on eight battleships and eight cruisers, in response to the U.S. Daniels Plan (a plan to build a large fleet centering on ten battleships and six cruisers) after World War I. The first main ship of the 88th Fleet was the battleship Nagato. The Nagato was designed to outperform or be equal to the battleships planned by the navies of other countries, and as the most powerful battleship equipped with a 40cm gun, the largest gun at the time, it was launched on November 9, 1919, and completed on November 25, 1920 at the Kure Naval Arsenal. The Nagato was completed on November 25, 1920. Nagato reigned as the most powerful battleship in the Imperial Japanese Navy along with Mutsu, a ship of the same type, due in part to the Washington-London Disarmament Treaty. Nagato participated in the Battle of Midway, the Battle of Mariana, and the Battle of Leyte, but the time had already passed when battles were decided by the guns of battleships. After the war ended in Yokosuka, Nagato was seized by the U.S. forces. In July 1946, Nagato became the target test ship for a hydrogen bomb test, and showed strong defensive capabilities, withstanding the powerful explosion of the hydrogen bomb and remaining afloat for several days. A few days later, however, Nagato suddenly disappeared from the ocean, never to be seen by anyone as she sank. *The image shown is a prototype. *The series No. will continue after renewal.
