Initially, the squadron provided advanced flight training for cadets using the T-2, but in 2002, the F-2B was deployed, and the squadron now conducts training for the Fighter Pilot (F-2) Course. Eighteen F-2B aircraft were damaged by the tsunami caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake in March 2011, but 13 of them had been repaired and returned to service by 2018. In October 2026, the unit celebrated its 50th anniversary, and one of these aircraft?No. 121 (33-8121)?was unveiled with a commemorative paint scheme.
