The former West German Air Force had planned to shift from the F-104G to the Tornado IDS (jointly developed by Britain, Germany, and Italy) in the early 1970s, but due to development delays, it considered adopting the lighter and simpler F-4 that had been proposed by the United States. Initially, a single-seat type was considered, but based on the results of the RF-4E, which had been introduced earlier, the F-4 was converted back to a double-seat type. However, because it was equipped with a simple radar without an illuminator function, it could not operate with the AIM-7 Sparrow and was equipped with only the AIM-9 and a machine gun as air-to-air armament. In addition, the aerial refueling system and one in-flight fuel tank were removed to reduce weight. Externally, the F-4F features movable leading edge slats and stabilizers (tail stabilizers) without fixed slats. The F-4F will be procured by two fighter-bomber squadrons and two interceptor squadrons with 175 aircraft. In 1983, the radar equipment is replaced with AN/APG-65GY to improve out-of-sight lookdown/shootdown capability under the Improved Combat Efficiency (ICE) program, enabling AIM-120AMRAAM operations. 110 aircraft were converted for air defense, while 37 others were converted for enhanced ground attack without radar refurbishment. This product reproduces the combination of a new mold soft wing and stabilizers without fixed leading edge slats. When completed, it will look different from the E (late type). Markings will reproduce the aircraft belonging to the 71st Fighter Wing (JG71) “Richthofen” in 1985 and 2013.
