The F-4F adopted by the West German Air Force was a simplified version of the U.S. Air Force’s F-4E, developed to meet budgetary constraints. The aircraft was unable to carry the AIM-7 air-to-air missile, its primary armament, and the AN/APQ-120 fire control system was downgraded. Additionally, the West German Air Force opted not to procure newer models of the AIM-9 series, limiting its use to the AIM-9B. Because it was equipped with an analog radar sight, it could not process digital image signals from electro-optical weapons, making it impossible to operate the AGM-65 Maverick air-to-ground missile, which was state-of-the-art at the time. The F-4F was not designed for all-weather capability and was designated as a NATO Clear-Weather Interceptor (CWI), with its primary mission being air support for ground forces. West Germany procured a total of 175 F-4Fs, which were assigned to the fighter wings JG71 and JG74, as well as the fighter-bomber wings JB35 and JB36. This kit reproduces the markings of two variants from JG74, as well as those of the 20th Training Flight Support Squadron (20TFTS), a U.S. Air Force unit assigned to the German Air Force. Notably, JG74 was named by Gunter Rall?a World War II veteran ace pilot who later became a Lieutenant General in the West German Air Force?in honor of the ace pilot Melders, who boasted 115 aerial victories. Series Name 1/72 Scale Jet Aircraft (Limited Edition)
