About the actual aircraft: The F-2 fighter has been in operation since 2000 and has been the main fighter of the Air Self-Defense Force. Development began in 1988 as the successor to the F-1. Development work was carried out jointly by Japan and the U.S. based on the U.S. F-16, taking into consideration its operation as a Self-Defense Forces aircraft and the geographical factors of Japan. It is capable of carrying and operating long-range air-to-ship missiles and ASMs, as well as air-to-air radar missiles. It was first deployed to the 3rd Squadron at Misawa Air Base, and then to the 6th and 8th Squadrons at Tsukiagi Air Base. They are demonstrating their capabilities for air defense missions in the skies of Japan. From January 16 to 26, 2023, the first joint training exercise with MiGs of the Indian Air Force was held at the Hyakuri Air Base.
