The history of Japanese motor sports began with the 1st Japan Grand Prix (GP) held in 1963. Domestic manufacturers at that time were actively engaged in harsh motor sports, and in 1965 Toyota formed TMSC (Toyota Motorsports Club). In the following year, I went to the 3 rd Japanese Grand Prix for the first time with Toyota's first model 2000 GT equipped with DOHC engine.

The CELICA 1600 GT debuted in October 1970 was under development of race specifications from the development stage. We have added a front spoiler, rear spoiler, head lamp cover and over fender whose shape was determined by computer and wind tunnel experiment. The 2T-G engine was developed with the objective of raising the power by making dry sump etc., and raising the suspension arm to a strong touring car that can compete against rivals, such as being fully rebuilt.

Celica 1600 GT first participated in the race is the Japan All Star Race held in Fuji in November 1971. It was a brilliant debut that monopolizes 1st to 3rd place in TS-b class which participated in 3 players. Celica 's good advances continued in 1972 and won the Touring Car class at All Japan Suzuka Auto Race in March. In April of the same year, at the Fuji Race De Nippon we exercised the potential to hold down the top such as skylan GT - R and Fairlady 240 Z suppressed overall victory.
