Development began in the U.S. in 1952, and the first flight was in 1954. The U.S. Air Force began operating the aircraft in 1954. It had a unique style that resembled a rocket equipped with wings, and was powered by General Electric's J79 turbojet engine. It boasted a maximum speed of Mach 2. In addition to the United States, the F-104J was adopted by Germany and other North Atlantic Treaty Organization countries, and was also deployed by Japan's Air Self-Defense Force.
