The prototype first flew in 1977. It was formally adopted in 1983, with operational service beginning the following year, 1984. It is powered by two Klimov RD-33 turbofan engines, achieving a maximum speed of Mach 2.25. In addition to a fixed 30mm cannon, it can carry short-range air-to-air missiles like the R-60 Aifade and AA-11 Archer, as well as medium-range missiles such as the AA-10 Alamo and Apex missiles. The MiG-29 underwent continuous improvements and evolution, maintaining its role as a mainstay fighter while various variants were developed.
