In the 1950s, it introduced the M4A1 Sherman tank equipped with the 76mm M1 gun to counter the Arab side's T-34/85. To distinguish it from the previous 75mm gun variant, it was named the M1 Super Sherman. It featured a rounded cast hull housing a radial air-cooled gasoline engine. Many vehicles were equipped with Vertical Volute Spring Suspension (VVSS) on the running gear. It saw its first combat deployment during the Second Arab-Israeli War, which erupted in October 1956, proving its worth in the desert battles of the Sinai Peninsula.
