Its cast hull, developed from the basic design of the M48 tank introduced in the 1950s, housed a supercharged air-cooled diesel engine. The similarly cast turret mounted a 105mm gun equipped with a thermal sleeve. Further enhanced with a laser rangefinder and ballistic computer, it delivered outstanding offensive capability. Production began in 1978, with over 3,600 units deployed.
